Ignition interlock system
an ignition interlock is an in car breathalyzer that prevents the vehicle from starting if the BAC is over 0.02

Before starting the vehicle the driver must blow into the ignition interlock

Once the vehicle has started the driver must blow into the ignition interlock at random intervals

If the driver fails the test while driving the lights will flash and the horn will honk until the driver turns the car off

Drivers who blow between a 0.05 and 0.08 will lose their license for 3, 7, or 30 days.

If you are caught between 0.05 and 0.08 three times within a 5 year period, you will receive an ignition interlock on your license for 6 months.

After the driver has finished his/her time with the ignition interlock, they must apply to the ministry of transportation to have the condition removed.

Third time offenders will have the condition on their license forever.

The ignition interlock is not removable, it is connected to the vehicles ignition system, and must be used by anyone who drives the vehicle.

When the driver fails the ignition interlock that data is recorded, and results in the extension of the period of time the driver must use ignition interlock.

Drivers with the ignition interlock condition found driving a car without the device will face fines from $200-$20,000.

Vehicle owners who knowingly allow a person with ignition interlock to drive their vehicle, may also be convicted.

Drivers who require ignition interlock are responsible for all installation and maintenance costs.

80% of convicted impaired drivers are first time offenders.

There are around 13,000 drinking and driving convictions recorded annually in ontario.

First time offenders will have and ignition interlock for a minimum of 1 year. Second time offenders will have it for a minimum of three years.
